The device has a power converter stage (P1) with a reference potential (Z1) and supplied with system voltage. Another power converter stage (P2) has a reference potential (Z2) and is connected with a secondary side of the converter stage (P1) via a potential isolation element (G1). A digital control element (C1) i.e. application-specific integrated circuit, controls both the converter stages without potential isolation via another potential isolation element (G2). A power switch (S2) clocks the converter stage (P2), and an illuminant (L) is supplied with energy from the converter stage (P2).
