The method involves filling a conic laser tube (LT) with laser mediums of different pressure and applying voltage to electrodes (3,4) of the laser tube. The laser mediums are excited by applying a controllable, steered and stepless guide laser beam of low power so as to produce a displaceable population inversion zone in laser tube. Power of the guide laser beam is set based on dimensions of the laser tube and a laser beam matrix is formed by changing power of the guide laser beam. An independent claim is included for method for operating electrically pumped gas laser.
