<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulation device with which the heat release from the light incident side of a reflective liquid crystal panel can be promoted and the reflective liquid crystal panel can be efficiently cooled. <P>SOLUTION: A light modulation device 42 has a reflective liquid crystal panel 50 with which an incident light bundle can be optically modulated, a holding part 60 for holding the reflective liquid crystal panel 50, and a light shielding plate 62 provided on the light incident side in which the light bundle entering the reflective liquid crystal panel 50 is incident and fixed on the holding part 60.
