<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forging a workpiece which can restrain the generation of scales while enhancing working accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to the method for forging a workpiece by means of a forging press using a drive system which can optionally control the position and traveling speed of a movable mold which touches the workpiece put into a fixed mold at the time of forging. There are provided one to five stages where the travel of the movable mold is stopped during the travel of the movable mold to the lowest point in the pressing direction, while the movable mold continues to touch the workpiece. The load added by the movable mold to the workpiece at the time of stopping the movable mold is 20% or below of the maximum load added to the workpiece just before the movable mold is stopped. The stopping time of the movable mold in each stage is made 0.2-2 seconds. The average traveling speed of the movable mold in each travel section is made 10-100 mm/second.
