An infra-red ray generating device comprises a quartz or quartz-glass envelope 1 containing a coiled tungsten filament 2 connected to conductors 3 having flattened portions 10 which are hermetically sealed and embedded in compressed end portions 4 of the envelope, the outer ends of the conductors 3 being connected to sleeves 9 clamped on the envelope portions 4. The envelope contains an inert gas such as argon, krypton or xenon and the filament 2 is supported by spiral wire supports 6 of tantalum which also constitute getter means. The conductors 3 may be of molybdenum, tungsten or tantalum and in a modification, Fig. 4, comprise a foil portion 12 to which leads 13, 14 are welded. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the filament supports comprise tantalum discs some of which may have their centre hole in the form of an eyelet.
