The method involves converting a pulse width modulated control signal into a pulse width modulated output signal for controlling root mean square (RMS) voltage values of heater plugs (2a-2n). Pulse width of the pulse width modulated control signal is divided into different pulse widths. The RMS voltage values of the heater plugs are controlled by the pulse widths, respectively. The pulse width modulated output signal is output to control the heater plugs with the two pulse widths alternatively. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a glow timer for controlling two heater plugs in a combustion engine (2) an engine control equipment for outputting a pulse width modulated control signal.
