The invention relates to a composition based on cerium oxide and on niobium oxide in a proportion of niobium oxide from 2 to 20%. This composition may additionally comprise zirconium oxide. In this case, the proportions are at least 50% of cerium oxide, between 2 and 20% of niobium oxide and at most 48% of zirconium oxide. The composition of the invention may be used in particular for treating exhaust gases.
