The instrument (10) i.e. clip applier (12), has tool elements (16, 18) pivotable around a pivotal axis (14) relative to each other. An actuator device (20) transfers operating force to one the tool elements. A tool element aperture limiting unit (48) defines maximum opening angle between the tool elements in an open position. A stop unit limits relative movement of the tool elements from each other. The stop unit includes a movably held stop that is moved from a limiting position into a releasing position and vice versa.
