<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain temperature-up control without causing wear of a clutch or poorer drivability with a gear position kept in the neutral range on idling stop of a vehicle equipped with a mechanical automatic transmission, and thus to efficiently continue forced regeneration of a particulate filter. <P>SOLUTION: In a method for regenerating the particulate filter 6 in the state of idling stop of a vehicle equipped with a mechanical automatic transmission 13, the temperature-up control to raise exhaust temperature by performing a higher rotating speed of a diesel engine 1 than in usual idling is permitted when a foot brake is actuated in the state of stop of a vehicle with zero vehicle speed and a clutch is in the completely-off state even with the gear position of a shift lever of the mechanical automatic transmission 13 being kept in the drive range.
