The apparatus (11) has a gantry (17) rotatably mounted using a mounting unit (15). The gantry comprises a balance weight (31), which is changed in a spatial layer with respect to the gantry such that a compensation rotational torque is generated by alteration of the spatial layer of the balance weight and is activated on the mounting unit to achieve balancing of the gantry. A configuration change of the gantry induces a rotational torque that is caused on the mounting unit, and the balance weight is movably mounted with a shift mechanism (33). An independent claim is also included for a method for balancing a gantry of a radiation therapy apparatus.
