<p>A stretchable textile article comprises a piece of fabric defining an opening, a portion (16) of the fabric being folded to define a hem (12) along the edge of the opening. The hem (12) is secured by one or more continuous bands of silicone elastomer or other elastic adhesive (14) sandwiched between folded portions (16,18) of the fabric. The hem may be half or full turn and the adhesive may be a fast curing (less than 10 seconds) silicone such as RTV834. The opening may be circular, oval, elliptical or polyhedral in shape and may form a waistband or a vee-neck opening of a garment which may be turned inside-out prior to forming the hem. The fabric may be mounted on a support (28, figure 3) which can be rotated and translated while dispensing adhesive from a head onto the fabric prior to folding, manually or by machine, to form the hem. An air curtain may be used to aid dispensing of the adhesive. The support (28) may be mounted on a driven arm (30) comprising a motor to effect rotation of the support. The support may be translated to a heated curing station following formation of the hem.</p> |
