The present invention relates to solid powdery compositions that contain at least one astaxanthin derivative in an amount of at least 50 wt%, for example, 50 to 100 wt%, in particular 70 to 100 wt%, relative to the total weight of the composition, wherein at least 90 wt% of the powder particles have a particle diameter below 100 µm, in particular no more than 50 µm, and especially no more than 20 µm, and the powder particles have an average particle size (volume average, D4,3 value) in the range of 0.5 to 50 µm, in particular in the range of 0.5 to 30 µm, and especially in the range of 0.5 to 10 µm, and wherein the astaxanthin derivative is composed of at least one compound of the formula (I) at at least 70 wt%, in particular at at least 80 wt%, especially at at least 90 wt% or at at least 96 wt%, wherein R is a group of the formula, wherein # means the connection to the carbonyl group, A is -CH2CH2- or for -CH=CH-, and Rx is C1-C4 alkyl.
