711,788. Friction clutches. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 1, 1952 [Jan. 2, 1951], No. 142/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXVI, XXIX and XXXIII] A clutch .24, Fig. 2, comprises a hydraulic clutch and a friction clutch having a common casing 25 which is splined to the driving shaft 10a of a gas turbine engine. The hydraulic clutch is fed with oil through passages 30, 31 as shown and is drained through a restricted orifice 32. The friction clutch comprises plates 34, 35 which are urged together, against the action of springs 36, by pistons 37 sliding in cylinders 38. The cylinders are supplied with oil through passages 39, 40 and exhausted through ports 41 which are controlled by valves 42. The valves are opened against the action of springs 43 by solenoids 44. If desired the actuation of the hydraulic and friction clutches may be effected in response to the speed of the driving shaft 10a and the driven shaft 22 respectively. In a modification, Fig. 4, the hydraulic clutch is fed with oil through passages 50, 51, 52, 55, 56 and drained through a spring loaded ball valve 57. The plates of the friction clutch are urged together by a piston and cylinder unit comprising a cylinder 58, 59 slidably mounted on the'driven shaft 22 and a piston 60 fixed thereto. The oil fed to the space between the parts 59, 60 is exhausted past the piston rings 61 which are adapted to be urged into contact with the cylinder wall by centrifugal force when the shaft 22 rotates.
