PURPOSE: A short arc discharge lamp is provided to improve a flicker lifetime by forming a localized gap at the junction portion of an emitter part and the main body part of a cathode. CONSTITUTION: A cathode(2) and an anode are arranged to be faced the inside of an arc tube. The cathode comprises a main body part(3) and an emitter part. The main body part is made of tungsten. The emitter part(4) is made of thoriated tungsten which is extended to and joined with the main body part. A gap is locally formed at the junction portion of the main body part and the emitter part.
