Disclosed is an internal combustion engine comprising an exhaust gas treatment device which is installed in an exhaust passage, and a burner device which is installed upstream of the exhaust gas treatment device and increases the temperature of exhaust gas. The burner device comprises at least a fuel addition valve which adds fuel to the exhaust gas, and an ignition device which ignites the fuel added from the fuel addition valve. The fuel addition valve operates in an opened state when fuel is added from the fuel addition valve. If a detected intake air quantity is greater than a threshold value, the quantity of fuel added from the fuel addition valve per unit time is increased to a value greater than a predetermined reference quantity. The probability of ignition in the ignition device can be increased, and also a flame can be prevented from being blown out to thereby ensure sufficient ignition performance and combustion performance for the burner device.
