<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately derive amounts of light sources control according to a type of an image to be displayed on a display device. <P>SOLUTION: A vehicle display system is provided with a backlight 42 able to illuminate a screen of a display device 4 with a plurality of light sources. In a display control device 3 for controlling this backlight 42, an image type determining section 341 determines an image type indicating the number of vertical and horizontal pixels of an input image to be displayed on the display device 4. Based on the image type, a thumbnail generating section 343 forms a thumbnail image, which has a fixed number of vertical and horizontal pixels, from the input image. Based on brightness of the thumbnail image, a control amount deriving section 345 derives a plurality of the amounts of light source control, which prescribe the corresponding amounts of light of the light sources. Therefore, according to the image type of an input image to be displayed on the display device 4, the amounts of the light source control can be appropriately derived.
