The present invention relates to an apparatus (1) and a method for stimulating a person (2), wherein said apparatus (1) comprises: at least one stimulation signal generator (3) which gener¬ ates a stimulation signal which is applied to said person (2); at least one detector (7) for detecting a physiological signal derived from said person (2) in response to said stimulation signal; and a monitoring unit (6) which controls a safety switch (5) to terminate automatically the application of said stimulation signal to said person (2), if a critical state of said person (2) is recognized in response to the detected physiological signal.
