<p>Disclosed are an engine phase varying device with control performance improved by reducing the time required after producing a command for changing a relative phase angle until the change is made, and a controller for same. The engine phase varying device includes a relative phase angle varying mechanism adapted such that two control rotators, which are disposed to be coaxial with and rotatable relative to a camshaft and which receive rotational torque from a crankshaft to rotate, are relatively rotated by two electromagnetic actuators to vary the relative phase angle between the camshaft and the crankshaft. The two electromagnetic actuators are actuated at the same time to hold the two rotating control rotators in a fashion such that the rotators cannot rotate relative to each other. Furthermore, one of the two actuated electromagnetic actuators is provided with a reduced braking torque, thereby allowing the control rotator with the reduced braking torque to rotate relative to the other control rotator.</p> |
