<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery in which the periphery of a through hole of a battery case in which a rivet is inserted can be surely hermetically sealed, and a method of manufacturing the battery. <P>SOLUTION: A battery has a rivet 4 that is inserted through gaskets 7, 8 into a through hole 2A formed in a lid 2 of a battery case and connects an external terminal 5 and a current collector 9 connected to an electric power generating element in the battery case, or a rivet 4 that is inserted through the gaskets 7, 8 into the through hole 2A formed in the lid 2 of the battery case and connected to the current collector 9 connected to the electric power generating element in the battery case and whose other end side in the axial direction serves as an external terminal. The rivet 4 is connected to the current collector 9 at one end side thereof, and the one end side has a cylindrical portion 4D which is concave in the axial direction. The bottom surface 4d of the cylindrical portion 4D extends to reach the lid 2 of the battery case, or it extends beyond the lid 2 of the battery case and is located at the other end side.
