Non-metallic articles, such as moulded articles of artificial resin, are prepared for electroplating by the following steps, viz. (i) application of a metal powder electropositive to copper by means of a resinous or other varnish; (ii) deposition of a thin copper skin on the powder layer by immersion in an acid copper bath without the use of electric current; (iii) electrodeposition of copper from an acid copper bath. Nickel, silver or other metal may then be deposited. The metal powder employed should preferably be different in colour from copper to enable it to be determined when the powder is completely covered by the immersion process; an alloy of lead and tin is suitable.
|
