Disclosed is a hydraulic control device (50) such that when a lockup "on" state is formed by a lockup relay valve (54), not only is a first oil passage formed which, by means of an oil passage (L3) and an oil passage (L6), connects together a hydraulic power transmission chamber (28) and the output port of a modulator valve (53) that generates modulator pressure (Pmod), but also a second oil passage is formed which, by means of an oil passage (L5) and an oil passage (L7), connects together a lockup chamber (35) and the output port (55e) of a lockup control valve (55) which generates lockup pressure (Plup); and that the oil passage (L3), which constitutes the first oil passage, and the oil passage (L7), which constitutes the second oil passage, are made to communicate with each other by a bypass oil passage (L20) which comprises an orifice (59) at an intermediate position.
