<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method and a controller for a machine tool, which are capable of preventing abnormal wear and breakage of a rotary tool. <P>SOLUTION: A first position A of a rotary tool T relative to a workpiece W is stored when a machining load exceeds a first setting value Pa in basic machining based on a machining program. Then, the workpiece W is machined while the rotary tool T is moved on a tool travel path L in accordance with the machining program to avoid the workpiece W, so that the machining load becomes lower than the first setting value Pa after the machining load exceeds the first setting value Pa (2) (5). After avoidance machining, a position of the rotary tool T relative to the workpiece W is returned to the first position A (3) (6).
