<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold release agent made of silicon nitride powder capable of reducing impurities getting into a polycrystalline silicon ingot. <P>SOLUTION: The silicon nitride powder for a mold release agent includes a crystal phase having a crystallinity of 80 mass% or higher and a ratio of a crystal phase of silicon oxynitride of 1 mass% or higher, the silicon nitride powder having an iron content of 100 ppm or less.
