The invention relates to a dialogue system (23), by means of which a machining process carried out on a machine tool (1) can be examined in order to determine a proposal for improving at least one quality feature of a subsequent machining process, comprising input means (7) by means of which an operator can predetermine the quality feature to be improved, and further comprising a proposal module (25), which by accessing stored expert knowledge can determine at least one proposal for improving the quality feature. The proposal module (24) is designed to determine a proposal by reading data determined by a machine tool sensor system (1a,...1n) and/or image data from a machined workpiece (40) together with associated material and machining data (P1,..., P5). The invention further relates to a method for examining a machining process with the aid of such a dialogue system (23).
