<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a main substrate and a substrate constituting the functional block of a communication partner can be connected by serial communication without increasing configuration on the main substrate even if the communication partner increases, and to provide an image forming apparatus in which heating operation of a fixing device is started quickly regardless of control of the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes various actuators, a sub-substrate which controls them, and a main substrate which is connected with the sub-substrate and controls the sub-substrate. The sub-substrate has registers which store control information of the actuators, the main substrate has memories corresponding to the registers, and the main substrate and the sub-substrate are connected in a ring-shape and perform communication. The main substrate generates a packet containing the content of a memory as data, the packet is transmitted from the main substrate to the sub-substrate, the sub-substrate receives the packet, the register is controlled based on the packet, a packet containing the content of the register as data is generated and transmitted from the sub-substrate to the main substrate.
