<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scintillator that has high amount of luminescence and high energy resolution and is useful for discrimination of α-ray sources. <P>SOLUTION: An impurity-doped ZnO single crystal scintillator that has high amount of luminescence and high energy resolution is obtained by producing a Cu-doped or Cd-doped single crystal using a method of liquid phase epitaxy in which a ZnO single crystal is grown by bringing a substrate into direct contact with mixed melt of solutes, ZnO and CuO or CdO, and a solvent.
