<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which meets a plurality of characteristics and has a proper balance therein in the characteristics including a high upper-limit temperature and a low lower-limit temperature of a nematic phase, a low viscosity, a suitable optical anisotropy, a low threshold voltage and a large specific resistance; to provide a liquid crystal display device containing the same; and to further provide an AM device containing a composition having a low viscosity, an optical anisotropy of 0.10 to 0.15 and a low threshold voltage, and having especially important characteristics including a short response time and a large voltage retention rate. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first component, has a positive dielectric anisotropy, and has a nematic phase.
