<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer and its cleaning method which can perform the cleaning processing of a data base while making the processing speed of the printing processing and operation higher. <P>SOLUTION: The method for cleaning the ink jet printer 1 includes the step for recording administrative data in a data base 23 (S22), the step for performing the printing operation using a print head 41 according to the administrative data recorded in the data base (S32), the step for updating some administrative data including the result after performing the printing operation (S25), the step for eliminating unnecessary administrative data periodically and performing the re-recovery processing of unused area (S27) in the data base, and the step for performing the cleaning processing of the print head (S34).
