A method and device for encoding a video signal divided into subsets of samples, at least one subset of said video signal being encoded by reference to a reference subset involves filtering the reference subset, the filtering comprising selecting a filter to apply to a sample of the reference subset among a set of predetermined filters, according to a predetermined selection criterion. The predetermined selection criterion takes into account a rate assigned to each filter of the set of predetermined filters, the rate being representative of an encoding cost of said filter. The set of predetermined filters comprises an identity filter (F,d) which, for an input sample value, outputs the same sample value. Further, the method comprises a step of assigning (S430, S440) a first rate to the identity filter and at least one second rate, different from the first rate, to the other filters of the set of predetermined filters. The method of the invention provides a particularly efficient way of assigning rates to a set of selectable filters, while efficiently taking into account the local characteristics of a digital signal. The method and device allow the option of not filtering the video signal when no appreciable benefit will result. |
