PURPOSE: A system and a method for starting an electric vehicle are provided to improve battery efficiency by automatically stopping an engine when a vehicle waits for light to change. CONSTITUTION: A method for starting an electric vehicle is as follows. A first starting condition is inputted for starting an electric vehicle(502). A touch sensing signal is inputted from a touch sensor attached on a transmission lever of the electric vehicle. A starting control signal and a sound control signal are outputted according to the first starting condition and the touch sensing signal(506). The electric vehicle is started according to the starting control signal(514). When the electric vehicle is started, sound for informing a driver of the starting of the vehicle is outputted according to the sound control signal.
