The present invention relates to methods of determining abnormal metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI) and/or associated conditions in a patient. In one embodiment, the methods determine abnormal MCRI and/or associated conditions in a patient by determining the presence or absence of one or more MCRI genetic risk variants at the genetic locus of ADAMTSL3 and/or CMIP.
