[Class 94 (ii)] [See also Group VIII] In the manufacture of paper &c. bags &c., notches of substantial width are cut at variable distances from each other in a web, the web being propelled at one of a plurality of different speeds predetermined with reference to the desired spacing between the notches, by a notching cutter which is propelled through a closed path substantially tangential to that of the web, the speed of movement of the cutter in its path being varied so that it will be in contact with the web at fixed intervals of time irrespective of the web speed selected and throughout the time of contact will have a substantially uniform speed substantially equal to that of the web. The web 3 is fed by rolls 4, 5 driven through a changeable gear train 10, 11, 12, from the main shaft 8, whilst the notching cutters 20, on rolls 17, 18, are rotated by unchangeable gears 22, 23 also from the shaft 8. The gear 22, through a pin 31 and a rockable link 30, grooved at 29 to carry an adjustable pin 28, and further links 24, 25, pivoted together at 26, drives the shaft 21 carrying the notching cutters 20. The link 30, concentric with the pin 26, is rocked by a stationary cam 36 through a roller 35 and link 34, the cam having concentric portions b, d and also substantially straight portions a, c. With the pin 28 in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 to get normal spacing, Fig. 5, the rocking of the link 30 will have no effect on the cutter speed, but with the pin 28 adjusted to the right or left of the pivot pin 31, the link 30, in rocking, will increase or diminish the cutter speed, to conform, during the time of contact with the web, to the altered speed thereof, to produce spacings as in Figs. 7 and 6 respectively. |
