The device has a transmission unit (10) provided with a radiation source (12) for providing wavelength of a light beam (50). A detector unit (24) is provided with a transmission detector (25) for detecting intensity of the light beam. An evaluation and control unit (26) determines layer thickness of a coated layer (36) based on measured transmittance comparing the layer thickness with a preset reference value. The evaluation and control unit generates control instructions for controlling the order of material of a coating unit (40) i.e. screw extruder, based on the layer thickness. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling order of a coating on a tubular substrate.
