A method for extracting a metal particulate from an aqueous solution, the mehtod comprising the steps of: - containing a sorbate ligand with the aqueous solution containing the metal particulate to form a metal particulate - sorbate ligand complex; and - containing a sol -gel derived sorbent swellable to at least 1.5 times its volume comprising an aromatically - bridged, organosiloxane sol-gel derived composition, containing a plurality of alkylsiloxy substituents, with the aqueous solution containing the metal particulate - sorbate ligand complex under condtitions effective to cause the a sol -gel derived sorbent to sorb the metal particulate- sorbate ligand complex.
