A method for selecting Optical Network Unit (ONU) management and maintenance manner is disclosed by the present invention, which includes the following steps: an ONU reports the management and maintenance manners which are supported by itself, to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) (201); the OLT selects one from the management and maintenance manners reported by the ONU as the management and maintenance manner for the ONU, and implements the configuration and the management for the ONU according to the selected management and maintenance manner (202). A system for selecting ONU management and maintenance manner is also disclosed by the present invention. Application of the method and system of the present invention can resolve the interoperability problem between the OLT and the ONU very well, and can reduce the complexity of the ONU implementation at the same time of completing the interoperability of management, operation and maintenance.
