GLYCEROL-3-PHOSPHATE ACYLTRANSFERASE AND USES THEREOF

An isolated protein which is at least partially encoded by a polynucleotide sequence encoding a novel glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase is provided together with a composition which includes the isolated protein. A transgenic plant, a transgenic alga, or a transgenic seed transformed by a polynucleotide encoding a protein which is at least partially encoded by a novel glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase is also provided. The invention also includes a process for making a triacylglycerols and very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid in a transformed plant, alga, plant cell or algal cell expressing the isolated protein which is at least partially encoded by a polynucleotide sequence encoding a novel glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase.
