The invention relates to power conversion and particularly to an electrolysis or reverse electrolysis device comprising an additive in the aqueous electrolyte of the electrochemical cells thereof. The invention relates to an electrolysis or reverse electrolysis device comprising a first electrode (6, 106), a second electrode (7, 107), and an inter-electrode space (11, 111) that includes a functional medium arranged between the first electrode (6, 106) and the second electrode (7, 107), wherein the first electrode (6, 106) is produced from at least one electrically conductive means capable of being at the same electric potential at all locations so as to constitute said first electrode (6, 106). According to the invention, the functional medium is an aqueous electrolyte consisting of water, an alkali, and an alkaline silicate at a concentration of no less than 5 wt % of the aqueous electrolyte so as to obtain a protective effect for the first electrode (6, 106) and second electrode (7, 107) by creating an inorganic conductive passivation layer that mixes the compositional elements of said first (6, 106) and second (7, 107) electrodes and the compositional elements of the alkaline silicate together. |
