The method involves assigning partial gear boxes, a clutch and a group of gears. Emergency operation to drive in forward direction is carried out in the partial gear boxes. Transitions are assigned in the forward direction during failure of current gears engaged in the partial gear boxes. The clutch is closed, where the clutch is assigned to the active partial gear box if current vehicle velocity is smaller than a predetermined limit. The vehicle velocity is limited according to the predetermined limit during carrying out the emergency operation by engine torque intervention.
