The method involves providing an outer control loop (AR) for adjustment of oxygen concentration in an intake system. An inner control loop (IR) is provided for adjustment of portion of exhaust gas to be reconducted. The oxygen concentration is adjusted to an actual value in the intake system. A reference value of the oxygen concentration is calibrated in the intake system. The actual value of the oxygen concentration is compared with the reference value of the oxygen concentration in the intake system to calculate the difference of the values.
