A method of producing organic TFT arrays and other devices where electronic elements 15 are supported on a plastic substrate 10 via an organic planarization layer 11, includes providing protection for the electronic elements 15 against the ingress of a degrading species such as moisture or oxygen from a side of the substrate 10 opposite to the elements 15. The device substrate 10 may be a bilayer comprising a barrier layer 10a and a support layer 10b which are temporarily mounted on a rigid carrier 1 by an adhesive layer 2. Ingress of contaminants such as water from the adhesive layer into the TFT arrays 15 is blocked by the barrier layer 10a, which may be an inorganic moisture barrier layer disposed between an organic support structure 10b and the organic planarization layer 11. The device substrate sheet 10 exhibits a lower water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) than any other layer between the TFT arrays 15 and the adhesive element 2, therefore provides primary protection for the electronic elements from ingress of water. |
