<PICT:0441172/III/1> <PICT:0441172/III/2> A machine for applying sealing-material to the closure flaps of containers carried through the machine by a conveyer, comprises a supply roll which is alternately immersed in the sealing material and then moved into peripheral engagement with a transfer or applying roll, and means for intermittently moving the applying roll into and out of the plane in which the closure flaps are travelling. The supply roll 15 is carried by the arm 25 of a bell-crank lever 25, 34 and is raised from the tank 16 into contact with the fluted applying roll 14, by the operation of a cam 12 upon the roller 35, while the applying roll 14, carried on an arm 31 of a bell-crank lever 31, 32, is controlled by the cam 13 and roller 33. During the interval between the passage of containers 40, the roll 15 is elevated and transfers a film of adhesive to the roll 14, and during the passage of containers, the roll 15 is lowered, raised and again lowered, so that adhesive is applied to the flap 39 at its two outer portions, but not at its centre. Adhesive may be applied to the lower flap 43 by a roll 41, carried by a pivoted arm 46, which roll is dipped into the tank 42 and then elevated into contact with the flap by means of a cam 44. |
