The method involves determining a difference between an actual position (2) and a target position (3) using an evaluation unit (6). An acoustic indicator employs to indicate whether an actual position of a laser beam is above, below or at a target position. A basic signal is modulated with a scanning signal, where the scanning signal is changed as a function of the difference between the actual position and the target position. A scanning ratio and/or scanning frequency of the scanning signal are changed as a function of the difference between the actual position and the target position.
