The invention relates to a method for warning the driver of a vehicle 7 of a collision with an object 3 in a parking process, in which the distance of the vehicle 7 from objects 3,5 in the vicinity of the vehicle 7 is detected and if it falls below a prescribed minimum distance 19, a signal is emitted, with which the driver is requested to stop the vehicle 7, or the vehicle 7 is stopped automatically. Depending on the type of parking space 1 and the maneuver 9 carried out, the prescribed minimum distance 19,27 is varied. The type of parking space may be detected based upon contours of objects 3,5 delimiting the parking space 1 or upon vehicle signals (such as steering wheel angle, selected gear, vehicle speed) at the beginning of the parking process. |
