[Classes 136 (ii) and 136 (iii)] Driving-mechanism for children's velocipedes and other apparatus of the type propelled by the weight of the user comprises a seat and a foot support adapted to be moved relatively to one another, means for yieldingly supporting the seat or foot support, a rod secured to the seat or other movable part and provided with projecting arms supporting a rack adapted to drive a free-wheel gear on an axle or other shaft, and means for turning the rack into a different plane out of engagement with the driving gear and for retaining it in this position or in the driving position. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a body a resembling a horse is supported by means of legs b on a wheeled frame c, and is provided with a saddle 1, which is depressed by the rider's weight when transferred from stirrups 12 or footrests, the upward return movement being effected by a spring 3 acting on an abutment 4 on a reciprocating rod x. A U-shaped member 5 secured to the rod x is provided with a rack 8 adapted to drive a oneway gear-wheel 10 on the axle q of the rear wheels f. The rack 8 consists of a length of roller chain, the end links 25, 26, Fig. 6, of which are riveted &c. to the side walls 27 of a channel member 9, the length of the chain being such that it is out of engagement with the wheel 10 when the rack is in its uppermost position. Alignment between the rack 8 and wheel 10 is then maintained by the lower ends of the walls 27, which are bent inwards to reduce the breadth of the channel. The member 5 may be turned about the rod x so as to disengage the rack 8 from the wheel 10, and is held in this inoperative position by a pivoted clip 11. Steering of the front wheel d is effected by means of a fork g on a rod h secured to the horse's head, which is turned by reins &c. In a modification, the saddle 1 and reciprocating rod x, instead of sliding relatively to the body a, are carried by a body which is pivoted at its front end and supported on a coil spring at the rear. |
