PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus that identifies the direction of a document based on an image read prior to correction of distortion, an image processing method, a program, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: The direction of a document is identified in such a way that, in the case of horizontal writing, the direction of a document is identified based on the position information of a circumscribed rectangle existing at each longitudinal end of a scanned image; that is, the image is rotated so that a side where the circumscribed rectangles are aligned comes to the left; in the case of vertical writing, the direction of a document can be identified based on the position information of a circumscribed rectangle existing at each cross end of a scanned image; that is, the image is rotated so that a side where the circumscribed rectangles are aligned is at the top. This is based on the fact that documents are generally aligned at the front and not aligned at the end.
