In a building temperature regulating system, wherein the heating energy supply is dependent on external weather conditions and also on an internal factor, e.g., the temperature of hot water used to heat the building, a heated chamber located outside the building and so subject to the weather conditions, contains a temperature sensitive feeler arranged to take up a temperature corresponding to the heat losses of the chamber. As shown, Fig. 1, the chamber 1 is heated by a heater coil 5 in series with contacts 4 controlled by a bimetal strip 2 adjacent the heater, whereby the temperature of the strip 2 remains substantially constant. The temperature of a temperature sensitive resistor (feeler) 6 then takes up a temperature dependent on the heat losses of the chamber and hence on the external temperature. The feeler 6 is arranged in a bridge circuit with a similar feeler 11 responsive to the temperature of the hot water pipe 12, and fixed resistors 9, 10, 13, 14. At normal room temperature the bridge is balanced. Variations in the temperature of either feeler then upsets the balance and through an amplifier 15 adjusts a damper 17 of the water heating boiler in the corrective sense. The bridge may be deplaced by a voltage differential circuit; the amplifier 15 may be electric or magnetic, and automatic switches, safety devices, electric. blowers, &c., may be actuated in lieu of or as well as the damper 17. The chamber may, alternatively, be heated by a heater coil in series with a temperature sensitive resistor inside or outside the chamber, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), or the heater coil itself may be temperature sensitive, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another construction Fig. 5, the chamber is divided into two portions separated by a thermal insulator 19 carried by a bimetal element. The feeler 6 is located in one chamber portion and a constant energy output heater 5 in the other portion, the arrangement being that as the external temperature falls below the desired room temperature the insulator 19 gradually opens to permit heating of the feeler 6 by the heater 5.</p> |
