The method involves imaging an optical line on an upper surface of the measured empty container by a line projector, and selecting the image of the optical line under a triangulation angle (alpha) with an aid of a camera. The defined displacement of the optical line is evaluated. The deflections are compared by patterns to identify the empty containers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an empty container return machine comprises a laser; and (2) a light section triangulation method involves measuring an optical line on an upper surface of the imaged object.
