Disclosed is a process for producing molten metal employing a stationary-type non-tilting electric furnace that includes a raw material charging chute in one end of the furnace in the width direction which provides connection from above the furnace into the furnace interior, a heater that uses electricity to heat a bottom region of the furnace interior in the height direction that corresponds to the other end of the furnace in the width direction, and a secondary combustion burner provided in the top of the furnace between the first end and the other end thereof. The process for producing a molten metal comprises charging a predetermined quantity of carbon composite briquette containing carbon and/or a non-volatile metallic element to be formed as a molten metal through the raw material charging chute into the furnace interior to form a raw material packed layer having a surface that slopes downward from one end at the top of the furnace interior to the other end at the bottom of the furnace interior; charging a predetermined quantity of carbon composite briquette through the raw material charging chute into the furnace interior to form a briquette layer on the sloping surface of the raw material packed layer; forming a molten metal layer and a molten slag layer in the furnace interior by heating the bottom end of the briquette layer to melt the carbon composite briquette; feeding an oxygen-containing gas from the secondary combustion burner into the furnace interior as the melted briquette layer drops along the sloping surface of the raw material packed layer toward the bottom end of the briquette layer, causing the combustion of the CO-containing gas generated from the briquette layer; and then using the radiant heat thereof to effect the heating reduction of the briquette layer.
