An air-permeable mask 10 of a shape suitable to be placed over a user's mouth and nose and to sealingly contact the user's face, provided with means13 to hold the mask 10 in place on the user's face, and comprises one or more layer of a filter material positioned such that inhaled and/or exhaled air of the user passes through the filter material. The filter material comprises an air permeable substrate combined with an acidic polymer. The acidic polymer comprises either a polymer of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, or a poly-(carboxylic acid) polymer. The poly-(carboxylic acid) polymer includes adjacent - [CR 1 .COOH-]- units in its structure. R1 may be hydrogen, C1-3 alkyl, Cl -3 alkoxy or Cl -3hydroxy alkyl.
