Disclosed are particles which have excellent characteristics and are used for displaying black images on the basis of electrophoresis. The particles for image display are dispersed (suspended) in an electrophoretic dispersion liquid sealed between two opposing substrates, and either comprise a porous carbon material in which the value of the specific surface area determined by the nitrogen BET method is 100m2/gram or more and the pore volume determined by the MP method is 0.1cm3/gram or more, or comprise a porous carbon material in which the value of the specific surface area determined by the nitrogen BET method is 100m2/gram or more, and which has at least one peak at or below 10nm in the pore size distribution found by means of the delocalization density functional method.
